How to use it
- Paste the broken text on the left. Click TCVN3 or VNI to try a sample.
- The page detects the legacy font. If it guesses wrong, pick the font under Source font.
- Click Copy result and paste the Unicode text into Word, Google Docs or anywhere else.
To go the other way, for example for a machine that still uses an old font, choose Unicode → legacy under Direction.
What it does
- Converts text typed with the TCVN3 code page (.VnTime, .VnArial… fonts) and VNI (VNI-Times… fonts) to precomposed Unicode (NFC).
- Recognises all-caps lines typed with .VnTimeH, so accented capitals come out as capitals.
- Detects the font from patterns specific to each code page, and does not confuse it with French, German or Spanish.
- Uses the same tables and detection as the 1xQuickConvertFormat app.
What it does not do
- It sends your text nowhere. The conversion happens in the browser.
- It does not open .doc files directly. Open the file, copy the text and paste it. To fix whole files, use 1xQuickConvertFormat on a Mac.
- It cannot recover text that is already damaged. If a document was saved with the wrong encoding once more, some characters may be lost.
Why the text breaks
Before Unicode was common, each Vietnamese font family decided which character sat at which position. The "ộ" of TCVN3 sits where ordinary fonts expect "é", so an old document opened with a modern font reads "Céng hoµ" instead of "Cộng hoà". This tool re-reads each character with the old code page and writes Unicode.
FAQ
How do I know whether my text is TCVN3 or VNI?
You do not need to. The page detects it and says so under the text box. TCVN3 text often has characters like "µ", "·" or "Ö" inside words; VNI text has pairs like "aø" or "oä".
What if my text is already Unicode?
The page says no legacy font was found and leaves the text unchanged.
Can it fix whole Word or Excel files?
On a Mac, 1xQuickConvertFormat fixes whole TCVN3 or VNI text files and exports CSV that opens in Excel with correct accents. On the web, copy the text a piece at a time.
